2ND SMCA GULF MEET IN KUWAIT ON 30TH & 31ST MAY, 2013

Date 20^th May, 2013 Press Release 2^ND SMCA GULF MEET IN KUWAIT ON 30^TH & 31^ST MAY, 2013 Syro Malabar Cultural Association (SMCA), Kuwait will host the 2nd regional meet of the approved associations of Syro Malabarians in Gulf Countries on 30th and 31st of May 2013 for the first time in Kuwait. It is estimated that more than 5 lakhs Syro Malabar faithfuls live in the Gulf countries, which is considered as the largest section of the Syro Malabar faithfuls within the Church. In all the 6 Gulf countries, Syro Malabar Associations exist with the common goal of sharing the faith, traditions, heritage & culture of the church / community to the new generation. The Syro Malabar Synod’s Commission for Evangelization and Pastoral Care of Migrants (CEPCM) took the initiative to organize such a meet with the special intention to formulate an action plan to ensure proper faith sharing to the new generation, especially in the context of the ongoing Year of Faith announced by the then Pope Benedict XVI. The 2nd Gulf Meet is named as “SYRO MALABAR GULF FAITH FESTIVAL”. This meet will also act as a regional preparatory session for the Global Meet of Syro Malabar faithfuls, which is scheduled on 18th August, 2013 at Mount St. Thomas, Kakkanad, Kochi. The 2nd Gulf Meet will begin at the Holy Family Cathedral Church, Kuwait with the Syro Malabar Holy Mass on 30th May, 2013 at 7:30 PM followed by an inaugural function. H.E. Mar Sebastian Vadakel, Chairman for the Evangelization & pastoral care of Migrants Commission, will officially inaugurate the SMCA Gulf Meet. On 31st May, 2013, the Meet will be held at Kuwait Hayat Hotel from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Altogether, 300 delegates are expected to attend from 6 Gulf countries. H.E. Bishop Mar Sebastian Vadakkel - the Chairman of CEPCM, Rev. Fr. Mathews Kunnelpurayidom – the Vicar General of Vicariate of Northern Arabia & Kuwait Syro Malabar Co-ordinator, Rev. Fr. Jose Cheriampanatt - Secretary to the CEPCM and Rev. Fr. George Dhanavelil will present papers on various subjects based on the theme of the meet: ‘Living, Deepening and Sharing of Faith in the context of Gulf Migration’. Reporting of current activities of the associations, group discussions & question answer sessions are also included in the schedule to ensure proper participation and sharing the ideas of the delegates from the 6 gulf countries. SMCA Gulf Co-ordinator Chev. Dr. Mohan Thomas, Rev. Fr. Joy Marangattikala (sdb) and Rev. Fr. Johnson Arasseril (Ofm Cap) have been assigned as the moderators of each session. His Beatitude Mar George Cardinal Alencherry - the Major Archbishop of Syro Malabar Archiepiscopal Church, H.E. Mar Bosco Puthur - the Curia Bishop of Syro Malabar Archiepiscopal Church, H.E. Bishop Camillo Ballin - Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabian Vicariate and H.E. Bishop Paul Hinder - the Apostolic Vicar of Southern Arabian Vicariate have given their consent and blessings for the SMCA Gulf Meet 2013. Various activities are going on under 14 sub-committees consisting of about 100 members formed for the grand success of this Gulf Meet. REPORT OF THE VISIT OF THE MAJOR ARCHBISHOP TO CALIFORNIA

Dear Archbishops and Bishops, REPORT OF THE VISIT OF THE MAJOR ARCHBISHOP TO CALIFORNIA In spite of the gruelling 13 and a Half hours non-stop flight from Dubai to Los Angeles and the jetlag due to the time difference of 12 and a Half hours, the programmes of the Major Archbishop began in the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar parish of Santa Ana, California, without much break or time to rest. On 16^thMay, the day of arrival, the Major Archbishop and the Chancellor celebrated the Holy Qurbana with the parents and teachers of the children for chrismation and first communion in the Parish of Santa Ana. On our arrival, Bishop Jacob Angadiath of Chicago welcomed us on the phone and told us that he would join us at Houston later. On Friday 17^thmorning, the Major Archbishop visited Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles where they could exchange views on their Conclave experience and the situation of the Church in the United States. On the way back we visited also the Forest Lawns Cemetery where the largest canvas in the world is kept – the depiction of the Crucifixion of our Lord, done by Martes Domingo. In the evening the Major Archbishop administered chrismation and First Holy Communion to 18 children. On 18^th morning we were seen off at the Domestic Airport at Los Angeles by Fr. Emmanuel Madukkakuzhy and the trustees of the parish on our way to Sacramento, the next halt in the programme of the Major Archbishop. At Sacramento too 12 kids were administered chrismation and First Holy Communion at 10.30 a.m. on 18^th in Infant Jesus Church parish where Fr. John Pulisserry is the parish priest of the Syro-Malabar community. Among them there was one child who received all the three sacraments of initiation. The parishioners were all enthusiastic in organizing the celebrations and they are on their way to buy a church of their own in the near future. His Excellency Jaime Sotto, Bishop of Sacramento came over for the meeting and lunch after the Holy Qurbana. The Major Archbishop appreciated and thanked the Bishop who was then Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, for the mediatory role he played in buying the Syro-Malabar church at Santa Ana during the chaplaincy of Fr. Jacob Kattackal and also for all the helps he does now for our community in Sacramento. From Sacramento we went in the afternoon to St. Callistus at El Sobrante, a parish of the Latin Church, where Fr. James Thottapally is the Pastor. There the Major Archbishop was given a grant reception by the parish community and he celebrated the Holy Eucharist with them. To conclude the celebrations there, the parishioners hosted him a dinner, in which were present also 8 priests of Syro-Malabar origin working in the Latin Diocese of Auckland. Fr. James Thottapally is the one who first organized the Syro-Malabar community at Melpitas where we had the Holy Qurbana in the morning of the following day. On Sunday, 19^th May Fr. James Thottapally drove us to St. Thomas Syro-Malabar church Melpitas. At Melpitas we have a very well organized Syro-Malabar community of 300 families where the parish priest is Fr. Kurien Neduvelichalumkal. The sacramental celebrations there were very well attended by our faithful. The Major Archbishop there administered Chrismation and first Holy Communion to 9 children. The Mayor of the city was present for the celebration. The following day we had a few visits of persons and places around the parish.
