Chappel inside the Procura
The decision to purchase the property for the Procura got momentum during the first visit to the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI by H. B. Mar George Cardinal Alencherry as the newly elected Major Archbishop. The members of the permanent Synod were accompanying the Major Archbishop. On 12 October 2011, they visited the site of SM Procura, comprising 1 acre of land with a 5,800 sq/ft building in Via degli Estensi 137, 00164 Roma. The site is less than 7 kilometres from the Vatican.

As the statutes of SM Procura were approved by the Major Archbishop on 3 June 2014, the Congregation for the Oriental Churches canonically erected the Procura of the Syro Malabar Church at the Holy See on 18 June 2014, and the home ministry of the government of Italy acknowledged the civil as well as the juridical status of the House of the Procura of the Syro Malabar Church in Italy (Casa di Procura della Chiesa Siro Malabarese in Italia) on 23 December 2014 (published in the official gazette of the Republic of Italy on 20 Januray 2015). Fr. Stephen Paul Chirappanath was acknowledged as the legal representative of the said Procura on 05 February 2015.

Thanks to the decision taken in the Synod (January 2013), and thanks to the generous contribution from the bishops and the superiors general of the women as well as men religious congregations, the preliminary contract was made on 8 July 2015, and the final contract, on 30 September 2015. The name of our Procura is “Domus Mar Thoma” (Casa Mar Thoma).The temporary Procura of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church at the Apostolic See is at Via Torino 94. Once the planned renovation is over, it will be moved to its permanent site at Via degli Estensi 137.
The statutes approved by the Major Archbishop and accepted by the Oriental Congregation make the following observation about the Procura: The Procura of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church at the Apostolic See is an ecclesiastical juridical person according to the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (CCEO), Can. 920-923. The goal of the Procura is to facilitate the communication of the Major Archbishop with the Apostolic See and to provide, in the name of the Major Archbishop, more expeditiously and with greater effectiveness, for the care of the spiritual and material goods of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Rome and, in general, in Italy. And the Procurator represents the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church before ecclesiastical and civil authorities in Italy.
