The Episcopal Ordination and enthronement of Bishop George Rajendran, Bishop of Thuckalay is a unique celebration not only in the history of the Eparchy of Thuckalay but also of the entire Syro-Malabar Church. It is for the first time a person belonging to the Syro-Malabar Church, but born and brought up in another cultural and linguistic milieu is ordained Bishop of an Eparchy of the Syro-Malabar Church. Bishop George Rajendran, born and brought up in Padanthalummood in Tamil Nadu and baptized in the Syro-Malabar Church, is a man of the soil and his appointment as Bishop of Thuckalay has been welcomed by the people of Thuckalay with great enthusiasm. A congregation of more than 6000 had thronged to the specially prepared venue in the Sacred Heart High School premises. At 2.30 p.m. the Bishop-elect was brought to Sacred Heart Church, Padanthalummood by the Major Archbishop and an escort of Bishops, priests, religious and lay faithful. The dignitaries were welcomed with the traditional poornakumba and the school band. At 3.00 p.m. the ceremony began with a solemn procession with many priests and Bishops participating. Besides the Major Archbishop, Archbishop Joseph Perumthottam (Changanacherry), Archbishop Andrews Thazhath (Trichur), Bishop Peter Remigius (Kottar), Bishop Jude Paul Raj (Palayamkottai), Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan (Punalur), Bishop Paul Alappat (Ramanathapuram), Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil (Thamarassery), Bishop Sebastian Adayanthrath (Auxiliary of Ernakulam-Angamaly), Bishop-elect Jacob Muricken (Auxiliary- Palai), Bishop Vincent Mar Paulose (Marthandam), Bishop Samuel Mar Ireneose ( Auxiliary, Trivandum, Malankara), and Bishop Thomas Mar Eusebius (Malankara Exarch for the United States) took part in the ordination ceremony and the enthronement. Archbishop Joseph Perumthottam and Bishop Peter Remigius were the co-consecrators while Bishop Vincent Mar Paulose gave the homily. The entire ceremony was conducted in Tamil. At the beginning of the ceremony, Mgr. Philip Kodianthara, the Administrator of the Eparchy of Thuckalay extended a word of welcome which was followed by the reading of the decree of the Major Archbishop by Fr. Antony Kollannur, the Major Archiepiscopal Chancellor in English and by Fr. Christudas, the Chancellor of the Eparchy of Thuckalay, in Tamil. The Bishop-elect then made the profession of faith and then followed the ordination ceremony. After the ordination ceremony the newly ordained bishop continued the Holy Qurbana singing beautifully in the Syro-Malabar Qurbana in Tamil. At the conclusion of the Holy Qurbana, the Major Archbishop enthroned the newly ordained Bishop in his throne and the congregation stood up in a grand applause. The liturgical function was followed by a public meeting which was marked by the presence of many civil, religious and ecclesiastical dignitaries. The dignitaries included besides the Bishops mentioned above, Rev. Devakadaksham, Moderator of CSI, Honourable Minister of Forest K.T. Pachaimal, Fr. Maria Arockiyam Kanaga, Salesian Regional Superior for South Asia, Ms. Helen Davidson, M.P., Swami Padmnedar, Mr. Muhammad Ismael, and Mr. Manivannan, representative from the Eparchy of Thuckalay. Bishop Rajendran thanked the speakers for their felicitations and Sr. Mercitta SH gave the vote of thanks. The function got over around 7.30 p.m. which was blessed with a beautiful weather unlike the previous day.
