New Eparchy of Shamshabad::Syro Malabar News Updates New Eparchy of Shamshabad

 Holy Father Pope Francis has erected a new Syro-Malabar Eparchy (Diocese) and named it “Shamshabad” and appointed Mar Raphael Thattil as its first Bishop. On 11th January 2014, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Mar Raphael Thattil as the Apostolic Visitor for the Syro-Malabar migrant faithful in India, residing outside the jurisdiction of the existing 29 Syro-Malabar Eparchies. His faithful are spread all over India in 24 states, 3 union territories and 2 islands of India. 

 Presently it has got a total of 130,000 Syro-Malabar Catholics. We have to cater to the spiritual needs of almost 100 Cities of India where there are Syro-Malabar Migrant Catholics. In 102 places already Syro-Malabar Holy Qurbana is being celebrated. We hope that eventually in 85 more places we can form communities. Already 85 priests are serving in this mission. We have already begun seminary formation and we have 4 candidates in various stages of formation. This new Eparchy of Shamshabad,  situated 25 k.m. away from Hyderabad, is a city comes under Ranga Reddy District in the state of Telangana. Shamshabad boasts the brand-new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The Diocese of Shamshabad has got 11 Parishes and in 7 places Church constructions are going on. We have got our own arrangement for the Priests to stay in 11 places. Hyderabad is blessed to have a Children’s Home and at least in 8 communities we search for land. In the last two years we have registered 8 common trusts and there are 14 other trusts for the parishes.

 Mar Raphael Thattil was born on 21-4-1956 at Trichur in the Our Dolours Parish popularly known as Puthenpally. He has the educational qualifications B.Th. and DOCL from Rome. He had his priestly formation at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor. After his ordination in 21-12-1980, he served as Asst. Vicar, Aranattukara (1981), Fr. Prefect, Minor Seminary (1982), Vice Chancellor of Curia (1988), Vice Rector of Minor Seminary (1991), Director of DBCLC and Catechism (1992-1995), Chancellor and Eparchial Judge (1995-2000) First Rector of Mary Matha Major Seminary (1998-2007); Syncellus and Protosyncellus (2007+). He has been instrumental for developing the Mary Matha Major Seminary. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Trichur and Titular Bishop of Buruni on 18 January 2010 and was ordained bishop on 10 April 2010.

 This news of the new Eparchies was published in Rome at 15.30 on 10th October 2017 and simultaneously the news about the Eparchy of Shamshabad was published at St. Alphonsa Church, Kukatpally in the presence of the priests, sisters and lay persons gathered in a special meeting. There was an adoration conducted at 3 pm. Rev. Fr. Thomas Karamel, the finance officer welcomed the gathering. Rev. Fr. Francis Eluvathingal, Coordinator General read out the news about the erection of the Eparchy of Shamshabad and Rev. Fr. Abraham Tharmassery, the Regional Coordinator thanked the gathering. The whole gathering in Jubilation sang Te Deum (Hymn of Praise)!
