Reading 1, Deut 7:1-11 You are a holy people. : Sir 15:1-6 The man of God received God's wisdom.

1 "When the LORD your God brings you into the land which you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than yourselves,

2 and when the LORD your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them; then you must utterly destroy them; you shall make no covenant with them, and show no mercy to them.

3 You shall not make marriages with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons.

4 For they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods; then the anger of the LORD would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.

5 But thus shall you deal with them: you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.

6 "For you are a people holy to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, out of all the peoples that are on the face of the earth.

7 It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love upon you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples;

8 but it is because the LORD loves you, and is keeping the oath which he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,

10 and requites to their face those who hate him, by destroying them; he will not be slack with him who hates him, he will requite him to his face.

11 You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command you this day.

Sir 15:1-6 The man of God received God's wisdom.

1 The man who fears the Lord will do this, and he who holds to the law will obtain wisdom.

2 She will come to meet him like a mother, and like the wife of his youth she will welcome him.

3 She will feed him with the bread of understanding, and give him the water of wisdom to drink.

4 He will lean on her and will not fall, and he will rely on her and will not be put to shame.

5 She will exalt him above his neighbors, and will open his mouth in the midst of the assembly.

6 He will find gladness and a crown of rejoicing, and will acquire an everlasting name.

Reading 2, Sir 24:1-14 (24:1-34) The greatness of wisdom. : Is 7:10-16 Virgin will give birth to a child

1 Wisdom will praise herself, and will glory in the midst of her people.

2 In the assembly of the Most High she will open her mouth, and in the presence of his host she will glory:

3 "I came forth from the mouth of the Most High, and covered the earth like a mist.

4 I dwelt in high places, and my throne was in a pillar of cloud.

5 Alone I have made the circuit of the vault of heaven and have walked in the depths of the abyss.

6 In the waves of the sea, in the whole earth, and in every people and nation I have gotten a possession.

7 Among all these I sought a resting place; I sought in whose territory I might lodge.

8 Then the Creator of all things gave me a commandment, and the one who created me assigned a place for my tent. And he said, 'Make your dwelling in Jacob, and in Israel receive your inheritance.'

9 From eternity, in the beginning, he created me, and for eternity I shall not cease to exist.

10 In the holy tabernacle I ministered before him, and so I was established in Zion.

11 In the beloved city likewise he gave me a resting place, and in Jerusalem was my dominion.

12 So I took root in an honored people, in the portion of the Lord, who is their inheritance.

13 I grew tall like a cedar in Lebanon, and like a cypress on the heights of Hermon.

14 I grew tall like a palm tree in En-ge'di, and like rose plants in Jericho; like a beautiful olive tree in the field, and like a plane tree I grew tall.

Is 7:10-16 Virgin will give birth to a child .

10 Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz,

11 "Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven."

12 But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test."

13 And he said, "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also?

14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a young woman shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanu-el.

15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.

16 For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.

Reading 3, 2 Tim 4:1-8 The crown of righteousness. : Heb 1:1-3+2:16-18 God's son.

1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

2 preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching.

3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings,

4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths.

5 As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry.

6 For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come.

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Heb 1:1-3+2:16-18 God's son.

1 In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 16 For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

Gospel, Lk 14:25-33 , Cost of discipleship. : Lk 1: 46-55 (Mt 1:1-17+Lk 1:4655) The Magnificat.

25 Now great multitudes accompanied him; and he turned and said to them,

26 "If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,

30 saying, 'This man began to build, and was not able to finish.'

31 Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?

32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and asks terms of peace.

33 So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple."

Lk 1: 46-55 ( Mt 1:1-17+ Lk 1:46-55 ) The Magnificat.

46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord,

47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;

49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.

51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,

52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree;

53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.

54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,

55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever."
