Major Archiepiscopal Commission for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life

Taking into consideration the recommendation of the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church held in August 2011 His Beatitude George Cardinal Alencherry, the Major Archbishop, constituted the Major Archiepiscopal Commission for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. He appointed Mar Jose Porunnedom (Mananthavady) as Chairman and Mar Lawrence Mukkuzhy (Belthangady) and Chittooparambil CMI (Rajkot) as Members of the newly constituted Commission. In consensus with the Major Archiepiscopal Authority the Chairman appointed Sr. Vimal Jose CMC (Principal, B.Ed. College, Ernakulam) as secretary. In order to advice the Commission a Religious Advisory Board (RAB) with fifteen members representing the various religious Institutes in the Syro-Malabar Church also was constituted. The members of RAB were chosen by the Syro-Malabar Religious Conference (SMRC). The Secretary of the Commission was approved as an observer in the meetings of SMRC. The term of office of the chairman and others as well as of RAB was for a period of five years. On completion of the five year term the Major Archbishop reappointed the Chairman and the Members for another term in August 2016.

Activities

The purpose of the constitution of the Commission is to help enhance the interaction between hierarchy and the Consecrated People in the Syro-Malabar Church and bring about a better understanding between them. To this effect every year interactive sessions are held between the Bishops’ Synod and the Major Superiors of the various Religious Institutes and Societies. Occasionally sessions are held between the Synod and SMRC. On special occasions extraordinary meetings of various sections of the Consecrated Persons also are held at the Major Archiepiscopal Curia. The Commission also aims to help the Institutes and Societies who would like to undertake services in other sui iuris Churches to have clearer understanding of the terms and conditions with the respective local ordinaries. The Commission help also the Major Archbishop in attending to the complaints from the members of the Institutes and Societies. Another area of service of the Commission is to provide canonical advice to the Major Archbishop in dealing with the matters of the Institutes and Societies.
